Gruha Lakshmi Yojana is a scheme launched by the government of Karnataka in 2023 to promote gender equality and women empowerment. The scheme aims to provide financial assistance to the women who are the heads of their households and do not have any income support. The scheme is expected to benefit about 1.1 crore women in the state.

The scheme was announced by the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah as one of the five pre-poll guarantees of the Congress party, which came to power in the May 2023 assembly elections. The scheme was launched on August 30, 2023, in a grand event attended by Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, D K Shivakumar, and others.

The scheme’s objective is to support women and improve their livelihood. It aims to empower housewives, landless women, and agricultural women workers by providing them financial assistance through a Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mode. The scheme also aims to enhance women’s participation in decision-making and social activities.

Benefits of the scheme

The scheme provides a monthly assistance of Rs 2,000 to the eligible women through their bank accounts. The amount will be transferred on the 16th of every month. The scheme will cover women belonging to Antyodaya, BPL, and APL families. The scheme will also cover widows, divorcees, deserted women, and single mothers.

The scheme will help women to meet their essential needs such as food, clothing, health, education, and sanitation. The scheme will also help women to purchase necessary items for their well-being such as utensils, furniture, appliances, etc. The scheme will also help women to save money for their future needs such as marriage, education, or emergency.

Eligibility for the scheme

The eligibility criteria for the scheme are as follows:

  • The woman should belong to Antyodaya, BPL or APL family.
  • The woman should be identified as the head of the family in the ration card issued by the government.
  • Only one woman in a family will get the benefit of the scheme.
  • Women government employees are not eligible for the scheme.
  • Women taxpayers are not eligible for the scheme.
  • If the husband of the woman is paying income tax or filing GST returns, the woman of that family will not get the benefit of the scheme.

How to apply for the scheme

The registration for the scheme started from July 18, 2023. Eligible women can apply for the scheme online or offline by following these steps:

  • Online application: Women can apply online through the Seva Sindhu Guarantee Schemes Portal. They have to click on the Gruha Lakshmi Yojana option and fill in the required information and upload the documents. They have to submit the application form and note down the application number for future reference.
  • Offline application: Women can also submit applications offline in Grama One, Bangalore One or Karnataka One office, Bapuji Seva Kendras and Nada Kacheris. They have to visit these offices and get the application form, fill it and submit it with the required documents.

The state officials will also conduct a door-to-door registration process to record beneficiary details. The beneficiary list will be displayed on the Seva Sindhu Guarantee Schemes Portal

How to utilize the benefits

The beneficiaries of the scheme can utilize the benefits by following these guidelines:

  • The beneficiaries should have a bank account linked with their Aadhaar number to receive the amount.
  • The beneficiaries should use their debit cards or mobile banking facilities to withdraw or transfer the amount.
  • The beneficiaries should use the amount for their essential needs and not for any illegal or immoral purposes.
  • The beneficiaries should keep a record of their expenditure and savings.
  • The beneficiaries should report any issues or grievances related to the scheme to the concerned authorities.
