Vanamala Lakshmeesha founded Bharadwaja Kuteera Niswartha Sevasharama with a pure intention of extending reassurance , assistance and support for the senior citizens during their second innings. They intend to change the perception about the old age and bring forth a shift from a sense of empathy to self confidence and dignity in them and are committed for a transparent service driven to fulfill their social purpose.

Our team interacted with Sri.Lakshmeesha who shared information about various activities of the organization.  Senior citizens who like to spend their retirement life , nuclear families who like to ensure their seniors stay in a safe homely environment during travel usually utilize this service.  This unique sevashram follows Brahmin culture and food style. Members stay by paying a nominal monthly fees . Ashram provides food , shelter , necessary regular general medical checkup care and regular recreation activities. All major festivals are celebrated.

Shantidhama at Kanakapura road about 30 kms from city center is a unique old age home for senior citizens which offers peaceful atmosphere stay. Started more than 2 decades ago and managed by Jain trustees it has offered tranquil experience to many senior citizens in their second innings.

Situated at an ideal not too far from Bengaluru about  3 kms from Sri RaviShankar Art of Living , this old age home offers services for senior citizens stay for both short term and long term duration. Shanti in Kannada means Peace and Dhama means a place to stay. This spot lives to its name for those visiting to spend some peaceful time.

  • Short term stay as low as minimum one day also starting at Rs. 600 per day inclusive of food , shelter and activities
  • Package for short term stay at Rs.6500 monthly for advance booking.
  • Package for long term stay senior citizens at Rs. 10,000 per month with a registration charges of Rs.5000 and refundable deposit of Rs.35,000

Currently Shantidhama has a capacity to host up-to 45 guests for stay . Stay options for single person , 2 person and 3 to 4 person per room available. Each non AC room has a attached restroom and bathroom , television and fans fitted.  There is a small Jain temple inside where pooja is conducted every morning and evening.  A big hall for gatherings and events , an outdoor stage for events , a separate common dining space and lush green space ideal for a stay. As of now a very basic medical care of Blood pressure check and Sugar levels check offered , in case of any emergencies relatives or guardians of guest to take care and arrange necessary.  Breakfast , Lunch , dinner served at regular times at the dining space with light refreshments before noon and evening. Outside food is allowed being strictly vegetarian with even no garlic allowed. Lush green surrounding ideal for walking , connecting with new friends.

Why Shantidhama ? Visitors from various backgrounds and needs visit this spot for stay.  In the current trend of nuclear families where a dependent parent may be alone if their children are traveling or not at home for some days , this may be a safer place for stay for senior parents and a change in atmosphere.  For some visitors it may be few uneasy experiences at home due to arguments or clashes and temporarily they want to be isolated to find peace and return back refreshed. For some who have spent their first innings towards family , now voluntarily joining for spending their relaxed second innings and so on.

About Gnana Jyothi Trust

Founded in the year 2005 , under the care of Shirdi Sai cultural center - trust works for the betterment of disabled community. The trust renders academic support services to over 300 visually impaired students throughout the state of Karnataka. The organization provides schools and colleges test books in Braille format to the needy students free of cost. For the purpose of providing free Braille text books to the blind students the organization runs a Braille transcription center with few members employed for transcription task

Apart from these services , trust also runs a free hostel for visually impaired college girls. The hostel Sai Sadhan which was commenced in the year 2013 hosts up-to 40 girl students. The inmates are provided with free food , shelter and education materials. Also tuition , computer education and counseling are provided at free of cost. A computer center was setup in 2016 with this objective.

Off late the trust has started providing similar services for visually impaired boys  at the hostel with free catering and lodging facilities for up-to 20 boys.  The trust has taken a initiative to build a school and hostel to accommodate another 60 such children to provide education , lodging and food facilities at free of cost.

About Adarsha Trust

One who has aim to reach and achieve something in life willed definitely towards it. The organizer of the trust Mr.Nawaz Pasha And Mrs. Hussein Banu are the witness for this development.  This couple is blind by birth , their motive is to serve disabled ones in the society like them and work towards their betterment.  Their motive is to bring the disabled ones up in the society to fetch and earn their own needs by continuously working very hard with their team seeking help from the society . Adarsha Trust was started in the year 2011 serving disabled girls without any discrimination of caste or color.

Free  hostel for visually challenged girls was built in 2016 at Whitefield.  Trust provides education and various training such as Computer classes , Spoken English , Personal development skills , Bharatanatya dance classes , Meditation , Yoga etc

Trust also supports higher education of the girls in its center by providing admissions to courses like PUC , MA etc through its network. Along with these , health checkups , eye checkups , eye operations and other related services arranged at free of cost by the trust . To enable talents , the students are made to participate in various cultural activities and events

Vara foundations , empowering the disabled and under privileged

In this article on change makers , we bring to you Vara Foundations , Bangalore - organization dedicated towards empowering the disabled and under privileged.

It was a busy evening , we were out for shopping for household items , while were busy shopping our ears turned to a melodious song which was sung by an orchestra with few instruments . Interestingly , we approached to the spot and were dumb folded to see an orchestra by few members of an NGO who seemingly had lost sight and visually impaired. We listened to their nice songs , appreciated their talent and shared a small contribution to the NGO.  We came to know they were from NGO Vara foundations who are doing a great job developing them.


About Vara foundation

Vara foundation for the disabled is a registered NGO established in 2018 by founding manager trustee Sri.G Arun Karthick along with his father Sri.K.S.G. Sekar

It works for the empowerment of people with disabilities and the under privileged. It caters to such people by providing a plethora of services including quality education , accommodation , nutritious food , vocational training , sports and placement based rehabilitation. They take initiatives towards creating opportunities for such people keep  pace with the rest of the society.

Established in 1988 by Smt.Vidya Tirtha as a non political , spiritual institution which has been engaging in humanitarian and social service activities for over more than 3 decades , without any distinction of caste , religion , race etc. It functions with the ideals of Service and Sacrifice

Inspired by Swamy Poornananda Tirtha , Smt.Vidya Tirtha , founder president of Tirtha Ashrama , took to social service at the age of 24 , leaving behind a successful job at the Council for Scientific and industrial research . She started Gargi Sadan , a home away from home  - for college girls in Basavanagudi in 1966. She ran it for 53 years imparting good moral values , character building education and life skills to all girls.

Later Tirtha Ashrama developed into a Vanaprastha Nilaya, an abode of peace and tranquility for the elderly in 1995. It aims to serve the elderly providing them with a peaceful environment for their spiritual progress and a pure atmosphere for good health. It was set up to serve the people that have helped build the world into what it is today.

Another wing of Gargi Sadan for school going girls was opened in Tirtha ashrama in JP nagar in 2015 for under privileged , orphaned school going girls. She aims to be able to take on hundred such girls in future. Through such social service she has dedicated her life contributing to society.

ThinkBangalore team got a chance to speak with her daughter Ms. Arya P Tirtha who is a early child educator and councilor , also vice president of the ashrama.

BLOOD is one of the most vital fluid component needed for major functioning of human body. It supplies oxygen , nutrients , remove waste carbon-di-oxide , acids etc



Blood  is one among the most precious gifts one can share which can save a life. A unit of blood can save up-to 3 lives. It is one of the noble donations which one must make during their lifetime in service to society which has given this life.  In this post we try to share the most frequent questions any volunteer has and encourage them for donation

Why donate blood

  • Blood is the most essential part of human body and can be transfused to save life
  • Blood is not manufactured or artificially available and can only be transferred from one human to other. 
  • Be it a man made or natural disaster , in severe trauma conditions blood is needed
  • Treating during pregnancy , patients suffering from cancer , anemia , malnutrition etc.

Who are eligible to donate blood

  • Adults between the age 18 years to 60 years
  • Those who have their body weight above 45 kg
  • Those who are not having diseases such as - AIDS , Cancer , Jaundice , Malaria , Diabetes , Asthma , Heart ailments , kidney ailments , Giddiness , Tuberculosis , Blood Pressure, Anemia

How frequently can one donate blood

  • Men - once in every 3 months
  • Women - once in every 4 months 

What quantity of blood is drawn from donor


  • A normal adult has an average of 5 litres to 6 litres of blood flowing throughout body
  • Usually One unit of 450 ml is collected from men
  • Usually One unit of 350 ml is collected from women

What are the benefits to donor health after donating blood

  • New blood generated helps in reducing and maintaining cholesterol levels
  • New blood gets generated within 24 hours of blood donation , within 1 month of donation necessary minerals get restored.
  • Aids to good memory levels

How donors should be ready before blood donation

  • Have regular balanced food rich in minerals at-least 1 to 2 hour before donation
  • Sleep well the night before the donation day
  • Hydrate with good water intake
  • During the time of donation be relaxed 
  • Should not consume alcohol ,  tobacco products , antibiotics medications

What checks are done by medical representatives before donation


 

  • Collect details about donor , medical history, take a consent.
  • Use a new sterilized syringe , needle for each donor test.
  • Blood sugar and Blood pressure checks.
  • Conduct a blood group test
  • There will not be any pain during the blood collection process , only a blood collection bag having small needle  is pierced to draw the blood from the veins flowing through hands
  • Within 15 to 20 minutes , blood gets drawn . After the needle is detached , a small bandage is pasted at the spot to avoid any bleed which can be removed after few hours.

How to take care after donating blood

  • Have light food , fresh fruit juice. Keep hydrated for next 24 hours
  • Minimum of 15 minutes rest
  • Should not consume alcohol for next 24 hours
  • Remove the bandage after minimum 4 hours.  If you experience any soaring feel , consult a doctor who may advise a paracetamol medicine.
  • If there is any giddiness , to sit in a posture by placing head between knees or lie down on back in a relaxing pose
  • At-least for 1 to 2 hours - not involve in tiring works such as exercising , driving , heavy load works.
