Bengaluru app based cab service in premium pickup hike

App based cab services have increased their minimum and waiting charges, with passengers now paying ₹275 for the first 10 minutes, making short trips and delays significantly more expensive. There is a recent increase in charges announced for app based cab services (like Ola / Uber), specifically related to waiting time and minimum fare, which is being referred to as a “Premium PickUp” charge. Charges for the first few minutes , Charges when the cab waits for the passenger ,  Additional costs for longer waiting time are updated. The impact this will have on passengers in Bengaluru and surrounding areas.

Increased minimum charge - For the first 10 minutes, passengers may now have to pay ₹275. Earlier, the cost for the initial time or distance was lower.  This is being referred to as a “Premium PickUp” fare

Bengaluru app based cab service hike in premium PickUp

Waiting charges have increased - If the cab waits beyond a certain time, additional charges apply. Earlier waiting charges were around ₹150. Now, if waiting extends , up to 15 minutes charges can go up to ₹425 , longer waiting means higher cost.If you delay coming out after booking a cab, you pay significantly more

Impact on short distance passengers - People who book cabs for short trips are the most affected. Even a small delay or short ride now feels expensive. Passengers feel they are paying a premium amount even for basic travel

What cab operators say - They justify this rise saying it protects drivers’ earnings - as Fuel prices have increased, Vehicle maintenance costs are high, Drivers lose time when passengers delay , Traffic congestion wastes fuel and time.

With this new rise many passengers are unhappy. People feel the hike is unfair and sudden. Daily commuters, office goers, and elderly passengers are affected the most. While officials are aware of same , no immediate rollback has been announced.

Rich history of our city , Namma Bengaluru

Bengaluru today celebrated as India’s technological capital holds a history that stretches far beyond its modern identity. Beneath the skyline of corporate towers and bustling traffic lies a landscape shaped by prehistoric settlers, ancient South Indian dynasties, empire builders, freedom fighters, and finally, post-independence visionaries. This article traces Bengaluru’s journey over thousands of years.

Earliest History: Prehistoric & Ancient Settlements (Neolithic to 10th Century CE)

Bengaluru’s earliest human activity predates recorded history. Archaeologists have unearthed evidence around areas such as Jalahalli, Chikkajala, Hesaraghatta, Begur, and Anekal, showing habitation during:

 1. Neolithic Period (c. 3000–1200 BCE)

Tools, pottery, and burial sites indicate that early farming communities thrived here.  The region’s natural lakes and fertile plateau supported agro-pastoral life.

 2. Megalithic / Iron Age (c. 1200–200 BCE)

Stone circles and burial chambers (dolmens) discovered around Bengaluru reveal strong megalithic cultural presence.  These communities laid the foundation for early Dravidian culture.

 3. Early Historic Period (c. 200 BCE – 300 CE)

The region formed part of the Mourya and Satavahana influence zones.  Trade routes connecting Tamilakam, Andhradesa, and Karnataka passed through Bengaluru’s plains.

 4. Rise Through the Ganga Dynasty (4th – 10th Century CE)

The earliest recorded name of Bengaluru comes from Begur, where a Kannada inscription from 890 CE mentions “Bengaval-uru” (city of guards).  Under the Western Gangas (based in Talakad), the region saw  Early agrarian settlements  , Construction of temples and irrigation tanks , First administrative identity of Bengaluru.  This inscription is considered Bengaluru’s birth certificate in recorded history.

II. Medieval Bengaluru: Cholas, Hoysalas, and Vijayanagara (10th–16th Century)

 1. Chola Rule (c. 1000–1100 CE)

The Cholas briefly governed Bengaluru’s southern regions:

  •  Tamil inscriptions in Someshwara Temple, Ulsoor
  •  Introduction of improved administration and temple architecture
  •  Intensification of rice cultivation and tank systems

 2. Hoysala Period (11th–14th Century)

The Hoysalas left deep cultural impressions:

  •  Development of trade hamlets
  •  Spread of Vaishnavism and Jainism
  •  Temple structures in surrounding villages

 3. Vijayanagara Empire (14th–16th Century) – The City’s Founding Age

Nadaprabhu Kempegowda I (1513–1569), a chieftain under Vijayanagara rule, founded modern Bengaluru around 1537. Kempegowda’s vision laid the blueprint for a structured urban settlement :

  •  Built a mud fort at present-day KR Market
  •  Established markets, residential layouts (“petes”)
  •  Constructed lakes such as Dharmambudhi, Sampangi, and Kempambudhi
  •  Created the famous four watchtowers, marking the city’s boundaries

III. Bengaluru Under Sultanate Rule (16th–18th Century)

 1. Bijapur Sultanate Control (Late 16th Century)

After Vijayanagara’s fall (1565), Bengaluru changed hands ,  Captured by the Bijapur Sultans , Became a military and tax administrative centre

 2. Rise of Kempegowda II and the City’s Cultural Flourish

During this period ,  Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple was expanded, Bull Temple at Basavanagudi was developed,  Water reservoirs and civic areas improved

 3. Mughal Interlude (1687)

The Mughals briefly controlled the region and sold Bengaluru to:

 4. The Wodeyars of Mysore and Their Historic Lease to Hyder Ali

The Wodeyars leased Bengaluru to Hyder Ali for an annual fee in 1759.

This marked the beginning of:

  •  Reinforced military fortifications
  •  Introduction of French-style army drill
  •  Urban expansion under a reorganized revenue system

IV. The Age of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan (1761–1799)

Bengaluru played a central role in the Mysore Sultanate.

 Hyder Ali

  •  Strengthened the fort
  •  Supported cottage industries and horticulture
  •  Introduced new agricultural methods (mulberry, sericulture)

 Tipu Sultan

  •  Built the Lalbagh botanical garden (initial layout by Hyder, expansion by Tipu)
  •  Fortified Bengaluru during the Anglo-Mysore Wars
  •  The city became a strategic location in conflicts with the British East India Company

The Fourth Anglo-Mysore War (1799) ended Tipu’s rule, marking a new political era.

 V. British Colonial Bengaluru (1799–1947)

 1. Wodeyars Return, but British Establish Cantonment

The British returned Mysore to the Wodeyars but retained control of Bengaluru Cantonment, creating a dual-city structure:

  •  Pete Bengaluru (Indian city under Wodeyar rule)
  •  Bengaluru Cantonment (British-administered, centred around MG Road)

This dual system shaped the city’s:

  •  Urban layout
  •  Linguistic diversity (Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, English)
  •  Early modernization (drainage, railways, telegraph)

2. Early Industrialization (Late 19th–Early 20th Century)

Bengaluru became a centre for:

  •  Silk and textile mills
  •  Coffee curing works
  •  Railways workshop
  •  Military establishments (MEG)

Electricity arrived early Bengaluru was one of the first Indian cities to get electric street lights (1905).

VI. Bengaluru’s Role in the Freedom Movement (19th–20th Century)

Bengaluru emerged as an important intellectual, political, and social hub during India’s struggle for independence.

 1. Early 19th Century Reform Movements

The Cantonment attracted educated Indians, sparking:

  •  Political awareness
  •  Social reform debates
  •  Rise of Kannada journalism

 2. Participation in National Movements

Bengaluru actively engaged in:

  •  Swadeshi Movement (1905)
  •  Home Rule Movement (led by Annie Besant)
  •  Non-Cooperation Movement (1920s)
  •  Civil Disobedience Movement (1930s)
  •  Quit India Movement (1942)

Prominent locations:

  •  Town Hall became a major protest site.
  •  Cubbon Park saw civil disobedience gatherings.
  •  Students from Central College, St. Joseph’s, and MES institutions organised major marches.

 3. Role of Sir M. Visvesvaraya

A towering figure from this era:

  •  Modernized Mysore State (which included Bengaluru)
  •  Pushed industrialisation and infrastructure
  •  Helped create institutions that nurtured a progressive civil society

 4. prominent Freedom Fighters from Bengaluru

Some notable contributors:

  •  K. Hanumanthaiah
  •  S. Nijalingappa
  •  T. R. Shamanna
  •  H. Narasimhaiah
  •  Numerous unsung students, labour unions, and women’s groups

By the time India achieved independence in 1947, Bengaluru was a dynamic centre of education, science, and civic activism.

VII. Bengaluru After Independence (1947–Present)

 1. Integration into Mysore State

Merged into the unified Mysore State (renamed Karnataka in 1973)
 Rapid urban expansion

 2. Rise of Public Sector & Science Institutions (1950s–70s)

HAL, BEML, DRDO, ISRO, IISc, and BEL transformed Bengaluru into the “Science City of India”.
Planned neighbourhoods like Jayanagar, Rajajinagar, and Vijayanagar emerged.

 3. IT Revolution (1980s–Present)

With the entry of:

  •  Texas Instruments (1985)
  •  Infosys, Wipro
  •  Electronic City, Whitefield’s ITPL

Bengaluru became:

  •  The Silicon Valley of India
  •  A global innovation hub with over 10,000 startups

4. Contemporary Bengaluru

Despite challenges of traffic, rapid urbanization, and infrastructure strain, Bengaluru remains:

  •  India’s startup capital
  •  A melting pot of cultures
  •  A city blending ancient lakes, colonial-era parks, and futuristic tech campuses

What makes Bengaluru unique is its ability to absorb every era and evolve without losing its cultural soul. From the ancient inscriptions of Begur to the microchip labs of Whitefield, the city’s story is one of resilience, reinvention, and relentless creative energy. "Idhu Namma Bengaluru, namma hemmeya uru" .

Without advance payment mandatory First Aid snake bite or dog or animal bite victims

The Government of Karnataka has issued a significant   Notification   to amend the Schedule of the   Karnataka Private Medical Establishments Act, 2007  . This amendment is a major step forward in ensuring timely and essential medical care for victims of snake and animal bites across the state.

The key change is the insertion of a new sub-clause into the   Patients' Charter   under the heading   Patients Rights  . This new provision,   sub-clause (iia)  , places a strict obligation on   Every Private Medical Establishment  :

  •  Mandatory First Aid:   Private hospitals must immediately administer   necessary first aid   and take   life-saving or stabilizing emergency measures   for all emergency cases involving   snake bite   or   dog or animal bite   victims.
  •  No Advance Payment:   Crucially, this emergency treatment must be provided   without insisting on advance payment  . This removes a critical barrier that often delays or prevents victims from receiving immediate, life-saving care.

This means that if a person suffering from a snake or animal bite presents themselves or is brought to a private hospital, the hospital is legally bound to start treatment right away, regardless of the patient's ability to pay upfront.

Private Medical Establishments are not left to bear the cost of this mandatory emergency care. The notification provides a clear mechanism for them to recover the expenses:

  • Claim Eligibility:   The establishments will be eligible to claim reimbursement for the cost of the emergency measures.
  • Claim Process:   The claim must be filed with the   State Government  , processed through the   District Registration and Grievance Authority  .
  • Reimbursement Rates:   The claims will be paid at the rates admissible to   eligible patients under the SAST scheme  .

This mechanism ensures the financial sustainability of the mandate for private hospitals, balancing the need for immediate patient care with the operational costs of the establishments.

This amendment is a powerful affirmation of a patient's   Right to Life   and   Right to Health  , especially in critical emergency situations like snake or animal bites, which can be fatal if treatment is delayed.

  • Immediate Relief:   Victims and their families can seek emergency care at the nearest private facility without the stress of arranging immediate funds.
  • Accountability:   Private hospitals are now held accountable for providing this initial emergency care, which is often the difference between life and death.

By issuing this amendment, the Government of Karnataka is making a strong commitment to public health, transforming an ethical obligation into a legal mandate and ensuring that financial constraints do not stand in the way of emergency medical care.

Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) corporations and wards boundaries GIS viewer online

As Bengaluru transitions into a multi corporation model under the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), citizens now have access to a robust and interactive GIS (Geographic Information System) Viewer that redefines how we engage with our city’s geography. Whether you're a resident, planner, researcher, or policymaker, this tool offers a bird’s eye view of Bengaluru’s administrative and political landscape—with precision and realism.

Key Features of the GBA GIS Viewer

Website Link - https://bbmp.gov.in/gisviewer/index.html

Corporation Zone & Sub Zone Boundaries

The GIS Viewer allows users to explore the boundaries of each newly formed corporation zone, replacing the erstwhile BBMP structure. Each zone is further divided into sub zones, which can be individually visualized to understand jurisdictional divisions and planning areas.

 Ward Listings with Boundaries

Within each corporation zone, users can access a comprehensive list of wards, complete with boundary overlays. This feature is especially useful for residents seeking clarity on their local governance unit or for civic bodies managing ward level services.

Specific Ward Boundary Visualization

Need to zoom in on a particular ward? The viewer supports individual ward boundary selection, enabling users to isolate and study specific areas. This is ideal for electoral planning, property mapping, and localized development tracking.

BBMP Drone View: Realistic Terrain Mapping

One of the standout features is the BBMP Drone View, which offers high resolution, realistic imagery akin to Google Earth. This mode provides a true to life visual experience of Bengaluru’s streets, buildings, and terrain—captured through drone surveys and stitched into the GIS platform.

 Assembly Constituency Boundaries

In addition to municipal zones, the GIS Viewer includes assembly constituency overlays, allowing users to understand the political geography of Bengaluru. This is particularly valuable during elections, policy roll outs, and constituency level planning.

The interface is intuitive, with options to toggle between layers, zoom into specific regions, and switch between administrative and satellite views.

The GBA GIS Viewer is more than just a mapping tool—it’s a civic empowerment platform. By combining administrative data with drone imagery and constituency overlays, it offers a holistic view of Bengaluru’s complex urban fabric. As the city grows and governance evolves, tools like this will be essential in ensuring that citizens remain informed, engaged, and spatially connected.

View corporation details for your location

Also there is an option provided on below link ,  for a specific location of a ward , details of the corporation can be viewed

Decoding Bengaluru Traffic Signals VAC , MNL , INL

If you've ever driven through Bengaluru, you've likely noticed VAC, MNL, and INL flashing on traffic signals. While most people understand the basic red, yellow, and green lights, these acronyms often leave commuters puzzled. But these signals are more than just letters—they represent advanced traffic management systems designed to improve flow, reduce congestion, and adapt to real-time conditions.

What Do VAC, MNL, and INL Mean?

Bengaluru’s traffic signals operate in three distinct modes, each serving a unique purpose:

  • VAC (Vehicle Actuated Control) – Smart, AI-driven signals
    • Uses CCTV cameras and sensors to detect vehicle density at intersections.
    • Adjusts signal durations dynamically based on real-time traffic flow.
    • Reduces unnecessary wait times and improves efficiency.
    • Operates automatically but may require manual intervention during peak hours.
  • MNL (Manual Mode) – Traffic police-controlled signals
    • Activated when officers override automated systems.
    • Used during VIP movements, emergencies, or extreme congestion.
    • Can lead to longer wait times, as manual adjustments may not be as precise.
  • INL (Intelligent Mode) – Pre-programmed signal cycles
    •    - Works on fixed durations without external intervention.
    •    - Used in areas with consistent traffic patterns.
    •    - Less adaptive than VAC but ensures predictable signal timing.

Decoding Bengaluru’s Traffic Signals VAC , MNL , INL

With over 900 traffic junctions, Bengaluru faces severe congestion, especially in high-density areas like Outer Ring Road, Silk Board, and Whitefield. Traditional signals fail to adapt to fluctuating traffic conditions, leading to longer commutes and bottlenecks.

To combat this, the Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) has implemented AI-powered Adaptive Traffic Control Systems (ATCS) across 41 junctions, with plans to expand to 165 junctions by year-end. These systems integrate VAC technology, ensuring real-time traffic adjustments.

 How Effective Are These Signals?

  • VAC signals operate automatically 94% of the time, but require manual intervention (6-17%) during peak hours.
  • Manual signaling has reduced from 40% to 3-4% at most junctions, improving efficiency.
  • AI-driven signals have been installed at key locations like KR Road, Hudson Circle, and Town Hall Junction.

Despite these advancements, manual overrides remain necessary for ambulance movement, VIP convoys, and unpredictable congestion spikes. With AI-driven traffic control expanding, Bengaluru is moving toward fully automated intersections, reducing reliance on manual signaling. The goal is to:

  • Minimize congestion by optimizing signal durations.
  • Enhance commuter experience with real-time traffic adjustments.
  • Reduce pollution by preventing unnecessary idling at signals.

As more junctions adopt VAC and ATCS, Bengaluru’s traffic system will become smarter, faster, and more efficient. Understanding VAC, MNL, and INL isn’t just about decoding signals—it’s about recognizing how Bengaluru is evolving to tackle one of its biggest urban challenges: traffic congestion. The next time you see these acronyms flashing, you’ll know exactly what they mean and how they’re shaping the city’s future.

Kaveri on Wheels , convenient way for doostep delivery of Kaveri drinking water

In a city where water scarcity is a growing concern, Kaveri on Wheels, launched by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), is a game-changing initiative designed to provide safe, BIS-certified drinking water right to your doorstep. This service eliminates the uncertainty of sourcing water from private tankers while ensuring affordability and quality.

Bengaluru, known for its rapid urban expansion, faces severe groundwater depletion and inconsistent water supply. While BWSSB covers approximately 60% of the city's water needs, many areas—especially Whitefield, Sarjapur, and Electronic City—rely on private water tankers. However, private suppliers often impose unregulated pricing, leaving residents with hefty bills.

To address this, BWSSB introduced Kaveri on Wheels, an initiative ensuring regulated pricing, guaranteed quality, and seamless access to clean drinking water.

With a simple online booking system, residents can schedule water deliveries from BWSSB-approved tankers. The process is transparent, efficient, and ensures safe drinking water without dependency on unreliable sources.
