App based cab services have increased their minimum and waiting charges, with passengers now paying ₹275 for the first 10 minutes, making short trips and delays significantly more expensive. There is a recent increase in charges announced for app based cab services (like Ola / Uber), specifically related to waiting time and minimum fare, which is being referred to as a “Premium PickUp” charge. The impact this will have on passengers in Bengaluru and surrounding areas.
Increased minimum charge - For the first 10 minutes, passengers may now have to pay ₹275. Earlier, the cost for the initial time or distance was lower. This is being referred to as a “Premium PickUp” fare
Waiting charges have increased - If the cab waits beyond a certain time, additional charges apply. Earlier waiting charges were around ₹150. Now, if waiting extends , up to 15 minutes charges can go up to ₹425 , longer waiting means higher cost.If you delay coming out after booking a cab, you pay significantly more
Impact on short distance passengers - People who book cabs for short trips are the most affected. Even a small delay or short ride now feels expensive. Passengers feel they are paying a premium amount even for basic travel
What cab operators say - They justify this rise saying it protects drivers’ earnings - as Fuel prices have increased, Vehicle maintenance costs are high, Drivers lose time when passengers delay , Traffic congestion wastes fuel and time.
With this new rise many passengers are unhappy. People feel the hike is unfair and sudden. Daily commuters, office goers, and elderly passengers are affected the most. While officials are aware of same , no immediate rollback has been announced.
