Vani Vilasa Sagara Dam , A Historic Reservoir Amidst the Hills of Karnataka

The Vani Vilasa Sagara Dam, popularly known as Mari Kanive, is one of Karnataka’s historic engineering landmarks. Vani Vilasa Sagara is among the oldest dams built in Karnataka and is also known locally as Mari Kanive. The reservoir has a full reservoir level of around 130 feet, storing significant volumes of water that support agriculture across the surrounding regions.

 

The dam primarily serves irrigation needs for farmlands within roughly a 100 kilometer radius, making it an essential water source for farmers in the area. Even today, the reservoir continues to support agricultural livelihoods and maintain water availability for nearby villages.  Beyond its functional importance, the dam also holds historical significance due to its association with the Mysore royal family and the visionary administrators who initiated the project.

One of the unique aspects of visiting Vani Vilasa Sagara Dam is the presence of two different access points, each offering a slightly different experience.

HillBottom Entrance - Visitors entering from the hill bottom side begin their journey at the base of the dam area. From here, reaching the top requires climbing a series of stairs that gradually ascend toward the bridge and viewing point. Although the climb involves some effort, it offers visitors changing perspectives of the landscape as they move upward. Once at the top, the panoramic view of the reservoir stretching across the valley is truly rewarding.

HillTop Entrance - The hilltop entrance offers a contrasting experience. Here, visitors first reach a higher elevation and get an immediate view of the dam and reservoir. From this entrance, one can enjoy the scenic view instantly and later descend via the steps to explore the lower areas near the dam. Many visitors prefer this route because the initial view of the expansive water body appears suddenly and dramatically. Rickshaws provide a short ride at Rs.100 from the bottom to this hill top which is useful for elders and having difficulty climbing stairs. An added advantage is that entry to the dam area is free, making it an accessible destination for travelers.

At the bottom of the dam, visitors will find the Maarikamba Devi Temple, a small yet spiritually significant shrine dedicated to the local goddess. Many visitors offer prayers here before exploring the dam area. The temple also serves as a small gathering point for travelers and devotees. Around the temple premises, a few local shops and stalls offer light refreshments such as snacks, tea, and beverages. These small vendors add a welcoming local touch to the visitor experience.

In front of the dam, visitors can see statues commemorating Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV and his mother Kempananjammanni Devi. The dam itself was constructed under the visionary administration of K. Sheshadri Iyer, who served as the Dewan of Mysore during the late 19th century. The project began around 1897 and took nearly ten years to complete, reflecting the massive engineering effort required during that era. Built primarily using stone masonry, the dam represents one of the early examples of modern water management systems in the region. Its completion significantly improved irrigation and agricultural productivity across large parts of central Karnataka.

On the other side of the dam, near Shri Ranganatha Gudi, visitors can enjoy a boating experience in the calm backwaters of the reservoir. Cost approximately ₹150 per person with a maximum capacity of 8 people per ride. The boat ride offers a relaxing way to explore the tranquil waters of the reservoir while enjoying scenic views of the surrounding hills and forests. Many visitors consider this a must try experience, especially during the evening when the sunset reflects beautifully across the water surface. For visitors seeking a more immersive experience, there are options to visit a small island in the reservoir area. With prior booking, guests can even stay overnight and enjoy the peaceful natural surroundings.The region also offers water sports and recreational activities, making it a pleasant destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.

The dam area is generally open to visitors during 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM .
