 ಗಯಾ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವು ಬಿಹಾರ ರಾಜ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. #ಫಲ್ಗು ನದಿಯ ತೀರದಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವ #ವಿಷ್ಣುಪಾದ_ಮಂದಿರ ಆಸ್ಥಿಕ ಹಿಂದೂ ಯಾತ್ರಿಕರ ಶ್ರದ್ದಾ ಕೇಂದ್ರವಾಗಿದೆ.

ಗಯಾ ನಗರದ ಇತಿಹಾಸ ತ್ರೇತಾಯುಗದಲ್ಲೂ ಇದರ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖವಿದೆಯೆಂದರೇ , ಎಷ್ಟು ಪುರಾತನವಾದದ್ದೂ ಎಂಬ ಅರಿವುಂಟಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. 

  ಶ್ರೀರಾಮರು ಪತ್ನಿ ಸೀತಾಮಾತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅನುಜ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ ನೊಡನೆ ಪಿತೃವಾಕ್ಯ ಪರಿಪಾಲನೆಗಾಗಿ ವನವಾಸದಲ್ಲಿರುವಾಗ , ಪುತ್ರಶೋಕದಿಂದ ದಶರಥ ಮಾಹಾರಾಜನು ಮರಣ ಹೊಂದುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಈ ಸುದ್ದಿ ತಿಳಿದಾಗ ತಂದೆಯ ಶ್ರಾದ್ಧ ಕಾರ್ಯವನ್ನು ಶ್ರೀರಾಮ , ಗಯಾ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಾನೆಂಬ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖವಿದೆ.
ಗಯಾ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಪಿತೃ ಕಾರ್ಯ ಮಾಡುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಅಂದಿನಂದಲೂ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಕೇಂದ್ರವಾಗಿದೆ.. 
ಯಾಕೆ ಇದು , ಪಿತೃಕಾರ್ಯ ಗಳಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಮುಖವಾಯಿತು ಎಂಬುದರ ಹಿಂದೆ ಒಂದು ಪದ್ಮಪುರಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಕಥೆಯೊಂದಿದೆ.

 ಈ ನಗರಕ್ಕೆ ಹೆಸರು ಬರಲು ಕಾರಣ , ಈ ಪ್ರದೇಶವನ್ನು #ಗಯಾಸುರ ನೆಂಬ ರಾಕ್ಷಸನ ಆಡಳಿತದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಿತು. ಗಯಾಸುರನು ರಾಕ್ಷಸನಾದರೂ ಮಹಾದೈವ ಭಕ್ತ. ಇವನು ಒಮ್ಮೆ ವಿಷ್ಣುವನ್ನು ಒಲಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಭೀಕರವಾದ ತಪಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಕುಳಿತುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಇವನು ಇನ್ನೇನು ವರ ಕೇಳಿ ಬಿಡುವನೋ , ಅದರಿಂದ ತಮಗೇನು ಸಂಚಕಾರ ಬರುವುದೋ ಎಂದು ಚಿಂತಿತರಾದ ಇಂದ್ರಾದಿ ದೇವತೆಗಳು ಪರಶಿವನ ಮೊರೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾರೆ.. ಆಗ ಪರಶಿವನು , ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ನೀವು ವಿಷ್ಣುವಿನ ಬಳಿಯೇ ಹೋಗುವುದು ಸೂಕ್ತವೆಂದು ಕಳಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅದರಂತೆ ಇಂದ್ರಾದಿ ದೇವತೆಗಳು ವಿಷ್ಣುವಿನ ಬಳಿ ಹೋಗಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಅಳಲನ್ನು ತೋಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ.  ದೇವತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಸಮಾಧಾನ ಗೊಳಿಸಿ ನಾರಾಯಣನು , ತಪಸ್ಸು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಗಯಾ ಸುರನ ಬಳಿಗೆ ಬಂದು ನೋಡಲಾಗಿ , ಗಯಾಸುರ ಒಬ್ಬ ಉತ್ತಮ ಗುಣವುಳ್ಳ ಭಕ್ತ ಎಂದರಿತು , ಗಯಾಸುರನಿಗೆ ವಿಶೇಷ ವರವೊಂದನ್ನು ನೀಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅದರಂತೆ ಯಾವ ಮಾನವ ,ತನ್ನ ಅಂತ್ಯಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಯಾಸುರನನ್ನು ಸ್ಪರ್ಷಿಸುತ್ತಾರೋ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಸ್ವರ್ಗ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಿಯಾಗಲಿ ಎಂದು.!! 

ಇದರಿಂದ ಗಯಾಸುರನ ಸ್ಪರ್ಷ ಮಾತ್ರದಿಂದಲೇ ಮಾನವರೆಲ್ಲಾ ಸ್ವರ್ಗ ಪ್ರವೇಶ ಮಾಡುವುದನ್ನು ಕಂಡ ಯಮಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾರಿಗೂ ಕೆಲಸವಿಲ್ಲದಂತಾಗಿ , ದೇವತೆಗಳು ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನ ಬಳಿ ಹೋಗಿ , ವಿಷ್ಣುವಿನ ವರದಿಂದ ಜನರೆಲ್ಲರೂ ಸ್ವರ್ಗಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದು ನರಕಲೋಕದ ಅವಶ್ಯಕತೆ ಇಲ್ಲ , ತಮ್ಮ ಅಸ್ತಿತ್ವಕ್ಕೆ ಧಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದಿದೆಯೆಂದು ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆಗ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮದೇವನು  ಇದು  ವಿಷ್ಣುವು ವರ ದಯಪಾಲಿಸಿರುವುದರಿಂದ , ವಿಷ್ಣುವೇ ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಪರಿಹಾರ ಕೊಡಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯ , ಎಂದು ದೇವತೆಗಳನ್ನು ವಿಷ್ಣುವಿನ ಬಳಿಗೆ ಕಳಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅದರಂತೆ ದೇವತೆಗಳು ವಿಷ್ಣುವಿನ ಬಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿವೇದಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ.. ಆಗ ವಿಷ್ಣುವು ಅವರನ್ನು ಸಮಾಧಾನಿಸಿ ಕಳಿಸಿ , ಒಬ್ಬ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣನ ವೇಷದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಯಾಸುರನ ಬಳಿಬಂದು  , ಲೋಕ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಾರ್ಥವಾಗಿ ಯಾಗ ಮಾಡಬೇಕೆಂದು ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಪರಿಶುದ್ದವಾದ ಸ್ಥಳ ತೋರಿಸಬೇಕು ಎಂದಾಗ ಗಯಾಸುರನು ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣನಿಗೆ ಅನೇಕ ಜಾಗಗಳನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.. ಇದಾವುದೂ ಪರಿಶುದ್ದವಲ್ಲವೆಂದು ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ.  ಆಗ ಗಯಾಸುರನು ಇನ್ನೇನು ನನ್ನ ಎದೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಯಾಗ ಮಡಬೇಕೇನು ಎಂದು ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಆಗ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣ ರೂಪಿ ವಿಷ್ಣುವು , ಹೌದು ನೀನು ರಾಕ್ಷಸನಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಪರಿಶುದ್ದ. ನಿನ್ನ ಎದೆಯ ಮೇಲೆಯೇ ಹೋಮಕುಂಡವನ್ನಿಟ್ಟು ಯಾಗ ಮಾಡಲು‌ ಅನುಮತಿ ಕೇಳಿದಾಗ,   ಇದು ತನ್ನ ವಧೆಗಾಗಿ ಎಂಬ ಅರಿವು ಮೂಡುತ್ತದೆ , ಆದರೂ ವಿಷ್ಣುವಿನ ಮಾತಿಗೆ ಎದುರು ಹೇಳದೇ ಸಮ್ಮತಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.

 ಆಗ ವಿಷ್ಣುವು ಯಜ್ಞ ಕಾರ್ಯ ನೆರವೇರಿಸಿ ಕೊಡುವಂತೆ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮದೇವನನ್ನು ಆಹ್ವಾನಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.  ಬ್ರಹ್ಮದೇವರು ತನ್ನ ಮಾನಸಪುತ್ರರನ್ನು ಋತ್ವಿಜರನ್ನಾಗಿ ಕೂರಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಆಗ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ಮಾನಸಪುತ್ರರು ಗಯಾಸುರನನ್ನು ಉತ್ತರಾಭಿಮುಖವಾಗಿ ಮಲಗಿಸಿ ಯಜ್ಞಕಾರ್ಯ ಆರಂಭಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಯಜ್ಞ ಆರಂಭವಾಗುವ ಮುನ್ನವೇ  ಗಯಾಸುರನ ಉಸಿರಾಟದಿಂದ ಹೋಮಕುಂಡವು ಅಲುಗಾಡುತ್ತಿರುತ್ತದೆ.  ಆಗ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನು ಯಮನಿಗೆ ದರ್ಮಶಿಲೆಯೊಂದು ತಂದು ಗಯಾಸುರನ ತಲೆಯ ಮೇಲಿಡುವಂತೆ ಯಮನಿಗೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಯಮನು ಧರ್ಮಶಿಲೆಯೊಂದನು ಗಯಾಸುರನ ತಲೆಯ ಮೇಲಿಟ್ಟರೂ ತಲೆಯ ಕುಲುಕಾಟವನ್ನು ತಪ್ಪಿಸಲು ಆಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.. ಕಡೆಗೆ ಸಾಕ್ಷಾತ್ ವಿಷ್ಣುವೇ ಗಯಾಸುರನ ಎದೆಯ ಮೇಲಿದ್ದ ಯಜ್ಞಕುಂಡದ ಮೇಲೆ ತನ್ನ ಬಲಪಾದವನ್ನು ಇಟ್ಟು ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತಾನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಗಯಾಸುರನ ಅಂತ್ಯವು ಸಮೀಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.. ಸಾಕ್ಷಾತ್ ವಿಷ್ಣುವಿನ ದರ್ಶನದಿಂದ ಮತ್ತು ಸ್ಪರ್ಶದಿಂದ ಗಯಾಸುರನು , ವಿಷ್ಣುವಿಗೆ ಸ್ವಾಮಿ ನನ್ನ ಇಷ್ಟು ದಿನದ ತಪಸ್ಸಿನ ಪರಿಶ್ರಮಕ್ಕೆ ಇಂದು ನಿನ್ನ ದರ್ಶನ ಮತ್ತು ಸ್ಪರ್ಷದಿಂದ ಫಲ ಸಿಕ್ಕಂತಾಯಿತು. ನಿಮ್ಮ ಪಾದ ಸ್ಪರ್ಶವಾಗುರುವ ಈ ಸ್ಥಳವು ಗಯಾ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವೆಂದು ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ದಿಗೆ ಬರಲಿ ಎಂದು ಬೇಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸವಾಗಿರುವ ತನ್ನ ವಂಶಜರನ್ನು ಯಾರೂ ರಾಕ್ಷಸರೆಂದು ಗುರುತಿಸದೇ , ಅವರನ್ನೇ ಪಿತೃಕಾರ್ಯ ಗಳಿಗೆ ನಿಮಂತ್ರಿಸುವಂತಾಗಬೇಕೆಂದು ಮತ್ತು ಶ್ರಾದ್ದಭೋಜನ ಮಾಡಿದ ಪಾಪವೂ ಅವರಿಗೆ ತಟ್ಟದಿರಲೆಂದೂ  ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ತನ್ನ ಅಂತ್ಯಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೂಡ ತನ್ನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಯೋಚಿಸದೇ , ತನ್ನ ಜನರ ಹಿತ ಬಯಸಿದ ಗಯಾಸುರನನ್ನು , ಮಹಾವಿಷ್ಣುವು ಗಯಾಸುರನ ಕೋರಿಕೆಗಳನ್ನು ಮನ್ನಿಸಿ ,   ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ಆದಿಯಾಗಿ ತಾನೂ ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ನಿಂತಿರುವ ಸ್ಥಳಕ್ಕೆ ಗಯಾಸುರನ ಹೆಸರಿನಿಂದಲೇ , ಗಯಾ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಎಂದು ನಾಮಕರಣ ಮಾಡಿ ,ಯಾರು ಈ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಪಿತೃಕಾರ್ಯ ನೆರವೇರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆಯೋ ಅವರ ಪೂರ್ವಿಕರೆಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಮತ್ತು ಕಾರ್ಯ ಮಾಡಿದವನಿಗೂ ಸದ್ಗತಿ ದೊರಕುವುದೆಂದು  ವರ ನೀಡುತ್ತಾನೆ.
