The temple is located in Hattiangadi (also spelt Hattiyangadi or Hattiangady), in the Kundapura taluk of Udupi district, Karnataka with a history dated back to 11-12th century. Hattiangadi was once the capital of the ancient Alupa Dynasty who ruled the Tulunadu region in the 7th-8th centuries. The temple is one among several ancient shrines in Hattiangadi.
The Lokanatheshwara Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of “Lokanatheshwara” — meaning, the Lord of the world worshipped in the form of shiva linga. As a temple in a former royal capital and major pilgrimage location, it would have served both spiritual and communal functions for the region’s rulers and residents — reinforcing Shiva’s role as sovereign of cosmic and worldly order.
